Why so many things are announced in UTC
Game launches, rocket launches, server maintenance windows, online exams, live streams. When an event has one worldwide moment and an audience in every zone, the organizer picks UTC because it's the one clock that means the same thing to everyone and never moves for daylight saving. The catch is that almost nobody lives on UTC, so "08:00 UTC" means a bit of arithmetic for every single reader. This page does the arithmetic.
The quick reference
Add or subtract these from a UTC time. The summer values apply while that region is on daylight saving; regions that don't observe it, like India, Japan and China, keep one value all year.
| Zone | Winter | Summer |
|---|---|---|
| US Pacific (Los Angeles) | UTC−8 | UTC−7 |
| US Mountain (Denver) | UTC−7 | UTC−6 |
| US Central (Chicago) | UTC−6 | UTC−5 |
| US Eastern (New York) | UTC−5 | UTC−4 |
| UK (London) | UTC+0 | UTC+1 |
| Central Europe (Paris, Berlin) | UTC+1 | UTC+2 |
| India (Mumbai) | UTC+5:30 | UTC+5:30 |
| China, Singapore, Hong Kong | UTC+8 | UTC+8 |
| Japan (Tokyo) | UTC+9 | UTC+9 |
| Sydney | UTC+10 | UTC+11 (Oct to Apr) |
Worked example
A maintenance window is announced for 08:00 to 11:00 UTC on a Tuesday in September. In New York, on summer time at UTC−4, that's 4:00 AM to 7:00 AM. In London, at UTC+1, it's 9:00 AM to noon. In Sydney, at UTC+10, it's 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM the same Tuesday. In Tokyo, at UTC+9, it's 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Type those into the box above with the right date and you'll see the same answers, and if the date were in January instead, New York would show 3:00 AM because the clocks have gone back.
Frequently asked questions
What is UTC?
Coordinated Universal Time, the reference clock every time zone is measured against. It never changes for daylight saving. New York is UTC minus 4 or 5 depending on the season; Tokyo is always UTC plus 9.
Is UTC the same as GMT?
For everyday purposes, yes. UTC is the precise modern standard kept by atomic clocks; GMT is the older name. London matches UTC in winter but is UTC plus 1 in summer, which is why "GMT" on a summer schedule is often a mistake.
What is 08:00 UTC in Eastern Time?
4:00 AM Eastern Daylight Time in summer, or 3:00 AM Eastern Standard Time in winter. The converter handles the seasonal shift when you set the date.
What does "Z" mean after a time?
Z is the letter code for UTC, from "Zulu time" in the military alphabet. 1430Z is 14:30 UTC.
Converting between two cities rather than from UTC? Use the time zone converter. Planning a call? The global meeting cheat sheet and the meeting planner do the overlap for you.
